"The plot of an Alafair Burke thriller doesn't just rip from the headlines. She's one step ahead of them. 212 scares you and keeps you turning the pages into the wee hours."

New TV

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

I know that as either a law professor or an author, let alone both, I should say things like, "Television? Who watches television? I wouldn't even OWN a television were it not for PBS." Well, I don't care what I'm supposed to say. I'll shout it from the rooftops: I love TV. Of my faves, only the Shield has launched for the fall, and this disappointing season of Weeds is about to end, so that's a wash as far as time is concerned. I think I have room in my TV viewing schedule for another show or two. I watched the much-hyped Fringe premiere last night. Promising premise. Not sure I'm loving that lead actress though. Halfway through, I asked the husband if she was trying to fake a pseudo-foreign accent or something. Now I see she's Australian, so I guess the problem is with faking an American accent.

What new or returning shows are you waiting for?

I can't wait for NCIS and Criminal Mind. I watched Fringe and it looks promising. I'm also interested in My Own Worst Enemy, and The Mentalist.

Hi,

I arrived here by way of your father's books and it seems I have to make another trip to the bookstore today for your yours :-)

Didn't get a chance to see Fringe last night (DVRed it -if that's a verb-, though) but I also was looking forward to The Shield and thoroughly enjoyed last week's and yesterday's episodes.

I guess one show I'm looking foward to is named, if I remember correctly, 'Life'. It was a lot of fun last season, the dialog was offbeat and fun and the mystery surrounding every story was very tantalizing.

As to new shows, quite a few sound interesting but I won't know what's to like until I've seen them. 'Life on Mars' (about the cop who gets transported to the 70s) does sound different and fun.

Side note: a friend of mine, a long time street cop in Indianapolis (refuses most promotions because it takes him away from the work he really likes), is a bit of a cross between the Shield's Vic and Clete Purcell, physically at least and not in the least corrupt. He is a gentle soul carrying a lot of ugly stuff in his head (Viet Nam Vet were he saw a lot of combat, never mind the ugliness of police work in a big city for over twenty years), always interested in the welfare of others and has no problems taking bad guys down for the count. He is also a superb "street survival" instructor.

P.S. almost went to Hofstra Law, ended up at Seton Hall Law instead but that was a long time ago.

I tend to be a bit quirky when it comes to TV. Can't stand anything remotely "reality"...but I crack up watching Psych or Pushing Daisies. I love NCIS, Burn Notice, The Closer and Bones. I know I'm in the minority on loving Law & Order: CI. And if I make the time for another show it's usually CSI:NY - just love that Gary Sinise!!!

Jen, you're not alone, I love L&O: CI. In fact, it is the only L&O show I watch. I'm with you on CSI: NY as well as my favorite cable shows, The Closer and Burn Notice.
